3 Steps for removing moss from your roof

The moss starts as a thin green layer on and between the shingles, but then it proceeds to lift those shingles up as it grows, allowing the water to seep underneath and causing wood rot and leaks.

Moss can drastically shorten your roof's lifespan, if left untreated, the clumpy greenery can cause virtually any roofing material to degrade, most commonly wood and asphalt, but also metal, clay and concrete. Fortunately, removing moss is a fairly simple task that you can perform on a seasonal or as needed basis to keep your roof weathertight and great looking.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you 3 simple steps to clean off moss and keep it from coming back:

Step #1

Climb up a ladder near to the area of moss growth and hose off the area with plain water, spraying at a downward angle. Then, use a long handled soft bristle scrub brush to remove the moss from the roof, scrubbing from the top down to avoid lifting shingles. As you continue, rub gently but don’t scrape, scour, or pound on the roof and work in one small section at a time to avoid ripping, cracking, or breaking the shingles. Do not use a pressure washer on the roof. The high-powered water jets can damage shingles and remove the shingle granules that protect the roof.

Step #2

If your moss problem requires more than just a simple cleaning, there are a wide variety of commercial cleaning solutions or if you prefer you can hire a professional roofing contractor, they will get the job done. Just wait for the next cloudy day before you head out to the roof with your cleanser of choice as this will prevent the solution from evaporating too quickly. Whichever you choose, follow the manufacturer's instructions for the application; Some cleaners should be rinsed off after use, while others specify to be left on.

Step #3

Prevent a moss problem from returning by asking your roofing contractor to install strips of coated zinc or copper coated sheet metal just below the top ridge on both sides of the roof. Copper is more toxic to moss and algae, but zinc is much less expensive. You can buy sheet metal in rolls and ask the roofing professional to cut it into strips of two to four inches and fix it to the ceiling using nails or roofing screws with a rubber washer. You also should consider pruning any tree limbs that overhang the roof—natural sunlight is a powerful moss preventive.

3 Ways to preparing your Roof for Winter

Winter is a magical season, and it’s the time of year when we should button up our homes as well as our jackets. It is important that you prepare your roof for the possibility of severe weather. By preparing your roof for winter, you will prevent the need for more extensive roof repair in the future.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you three basic maintenance steps that you can do to prepare your roof for winter.

1. Clean the gutters:

When leaves and debris collect in your gutter system, eventually, it will create a clog in the downspouts. Rain water will overflow the gutters, damaging your roof, trim and siding. The added weight of the wet leaves and water could also cause your gutters to pull loose from the anchor point or collapse.
To prevent these problems and unforeseen repair costs, make sure to keep your gutters relatively clear through the winter. And, once the trees around your home are bare, do a thorough cleaning.

2. Clear off debris:

It’s important to remove leaves, pine needles, and other debris from the surface of your roof. Even small bits of debris will hold moisture and possibly rot or mold, which will break down your roofing material.
If you’re confident and experienced in walking on your roof, get up there and broom or blow off the debris that has collected on your roof, paying special attention to the valleys, which are most vulnerable to water damage. Make sure they are free and clear of debris so as to allow water to flow.

3. Check for damages and deterioration:

With a clean roof, scan the surface for missing shingles or ones that have cracked curled or frayed edges. You can use binoculars to inspect from the ground or climb up to the roof to have a look.
Also check for damaged flashing around vent stacks, chimneys, and skylights. These areas are the usual suspects when you have a leak. Repairing flashing yourself may not always provide the results you expect, so give us a call and we’ll make sure everything is sealed properly before the rain hits.

- Will the contractor offer you a written estimate and contract signed by both? It is important to put the specifications and job prices on paper; this ensures your contractor remains responsible for fulfilling your contract.

4 Ways to prepare your home's exterior for Winter

Winter weather can be tough on all of us. When the cold weather sets in, it can be pretty hard on the exterior of homes and can bring along other weather conditions that make your home’s exterior vulnerable. The good news is, there’s something you can do to keep your house happy and in good shape to handle the elements. It’s as simple as taking the time to complete a good deep clean before the season hits.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you four important ways to prepare your home´s exterior for winter:

1. Protect your Siding:

If snow comes into contact with your home’s exterior, it can also create a huge problem for your siding. If you have any weak areas of siding on your home, it should be fixed or replaced by a professional before it gets too cold. The snow can get through the siding and damage areas of the house that the siding is supposed to protect. You should also remove any snow that builds up around your house, in addition to sidewalks and other walkways.

2. Check Foundation:

Check the exterior of your home’s foundation to look for any cracks. If there are cracks in the foundation and snow builds up around them, you could end up with a wet basement. Furthermore, the cold temperatures can make the cracks in the foundation worse.

3. Gutter cleaning:

It’s very important to clean out your gutters before it gets too cold. If your gutters are clogged up with leaves and debris, they can get backed up and fill with water. When the first heavy rainstorm hits, your gutters can overflow, causing water to leak out and damage your home’s siding, roof, or foundation.
When the cold temperatures arrive and it begins to rain, ice or snow, ice dams can form on your roof or in your gutters. This can lead to buildups of ice that can create roof leaks.

4. House washing:

A good cleaning before the winter weather hits can help prevent buildup of mold, mildew, moss, and algae from taking hold. This can be in the form of a good scrub, or power washing, depending on the surface. During the house washing, it’s also a good time to clear away debris and clean the foundation of your home. This helps to prevent damage, and also helps you spot any existing damage. These substances can flourish in winter weather conditions, thanks to the often damp weather. Any accumulated dirt can also help create ideal conditions for them to grow during the season.

3 Signs you need a New Roofing System

Most homeowners figure they require to replace the old roof after they identify a leak in their ceiling. This leak could be due to many roof repair problems.
With all the cold November and December weather and unexpected rains, you might need to know if is it time to repair or replace your old roof.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you 3 important you need to know to determine if your home needs a roof replacement or if a roof repair work will resolve the problem:

1. Roof age:

You have to determine how old is your existing asphalt shingle roof, a lot of experts concur that a typical roofing system will last between 20 and 25 years. It also depends on whether the old roofing system was removed and you only have one layer of shingles, and if it is properly ventilated. If the roof was installed over another layer and it is older than 20 years, chances are you need a new roof.

2. Missing shingles and daylight through the roof boards:

These are another common sign your roof could be failing. Check to see if all the shingle tabs are intact.
Examine your attic to see if there is any daylight coming through the roof boards. Also check for wetness in the insulation.

3. Shingles curling and buckling:

The shingles that are curled or buckling are another sign that you may require a new roof. Look at the slopes of your home that get direct sunshine and if you notice the shingles are curling and losing granules, it could mean the shingles are past their life expectancy. There might also be a possibility that the roof is defective and you need to contact an Atlanta Construction Company specialized in roof repair.

All about Rain Gutters

Home gutters are long, narrow channels used to funnel water off the roof and away from the home, which protects your siding, windows, doors and foundation from water damage. This keeps the ground immediately around the house from becoming waterlogged and potentially leaking into the basement or causing other damage to the structure as well as surrounding landscaping.

Without gutters, rain runs down the roofline creating a waterfall effect. If the roof has a wide overhang, this may not be too much of a problem for the foundation. But entering and leaving the home without getting wet can be more difficult especially during heavy rains.

At US ROOFING Contractors Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we explain you all you need to know about Gutters:

1. Gutter Maintenance:

You must be aware of keeping them clean and in working order.
The frequency with which you should clean out gutters depends on your house. Determining factors include proximity of trees to the roof line, the type of trees, and the slope of the roof. Low-sloped roofs can require more frequent cleaning.
For houses with trees within ten feet of the roof line, gutters will need to be cleaned out twice a year at a minimum. In some cases, gutters may need to be cleaned out a couple times in fall alone.

2. Problems that clogged gutters cause:

-Water can leak into the house and cause damage to walls and flooring.
-Water damming occurs which can cause damage to eaves.
-Insects can breed in the standing water
-Leaves in gutters can be a fire hazard, especially in areas prone to wildfires.
-Deterioration of gutters can cause leaks and eventual failure.

3. Proper installation of Gutters:

The majority of houses with gutters don’t have a system that is complete and installed correctly. A properly installed gutter system will include seamless gutters on every sloped roof edge. The gutters should not hold standing water, should not leak, should be securely fastened to the fascias, and should have downspouts that are securely fastened to the exterior of the house.

Exterior Siding Options

Siding gives protection and adds color and definition to the exterior of your house, but although aesthetics are always important, you also have to consider the material's ability to resist water, durability, versatility, and ease of installation.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we show you the most popular types of siding to help you create the perfect exterior to your home.

1. Vinyl Siding:

Vinyl siding is tough and comes in a boatload of colors and textures. The long lasting vinyl siding is beautiful, durable, never needs painting, and is not susceptible to rot or insect damage, is used for decoration and weatherproofing imitating wood clapboard. The versatility, low cost and easy maintenance of vinyl siding has made it become the most popular siding choice in the United States since 1960. The variety of colors and styles available that can fit the aesthetic of any home helps explain this siding's popularity.

Vinyl siding is lightweight and, in many instances, can be installed directly over existing materials, so it's a good retrofit option. It's easy to handle and can be installed quickly.

2. Fiber cement siding:

The current favorite of the siding industry, fiber cement has earned a reputation for stability and low maintenance. Offering the look of masonry, wood or stucco at a lower cost, fiber cement siding has become a popular siding choice for many homeowners and is more typically associated as being a replacement for wood. Fiber cement siding is non-flammable, low-maintenance and termite-resistant. Available in a range of textures and styles, factory finishes or painting are highly recommended and have some prefinished options available at higher cost and in a limited range of colors.

Five Tips for choosing your Roof colour

The roof is one of the largest fixed elements of a home and deciding its colour can be challenging for any homeowner or renovator. Most people think that all roofs should be black and one of the biggest reasons why they like a black roof so much is because the brown roof usually looks patchy. If the first thing you notice is the colour of the roof when you drive up to your house, that’s a good indication that you need to upgrade your roof.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you some good ideas to help you choose your roof colour:

1. For the average, traditional house, is better to stay away from an overtly coloured roof.

2. If the style of your home does not dictate choosing a colour, is better choose a dark neutral. This is the one place where your roof colour should be neutral and not colourful.

3. If you have a stone or brick house that will never change colour, here is when your roof colour should be very carefully chosen.

4. If you have brick or stone or both on your home, here is when the colour of your roof becomes the most important decision you will make regarding the exterior colours of your home. And that’s when a custom colour will most likely be required over black or brown.

5. A general guideline to follow when choosing an asphalt roof is to choose a darker colour than the body of your house. Unless of course your house is a very dark colour or there’s more roof than siding, then a lighter roof is necessary.

Modern Vinyl Siding Options

Modern Vinyl Siding gives you a great way to add color and definition to your house. Creating a perfect exterior of your house became easier with the creation of vinyl siding. While aesthetics are always important, you also want to consider the material's durability, ability to resist water, ease of installation and versatility.
Through the years, vinyl siding has changed and siding now has new and improved features.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you five important features of Modern Vinyl Siding:

1.Durability:

Today’s vinyl siding is more durable than ever. Siding of old was created with one layer and often included materials for durability that proved not to be safe, such as asbestos. Today, vinyl siding is created with a process called co-extrusion. With co-extrusion, two layers of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are applied to the surface. The top layer is capstocked or, as mentioned previously, strengthened with material such as titanium dioxide. This strengthened outer layer provides less breakdown over time as well as longer durability, thus resulting in less frequent replacement.
Creating a stronger outer finish also increases the wind resistance of vinyl siding. With increased outer layer strength, vinyl siding withstands strong winds and object impact damage.

2. Less Chemicals:

Siding of the past contained many chemicals required in the process of making the fiber. Siding often broke down with heat and extremes of weather, thus emitting chemicals into the surrounding environment. Newer siding is created with 10% titanium dioxide pigment, which provides resistance to the natural breakdown of ultraviolet light or extremes of weather. Generally, vinyl siding is sold with a grade, which represents its resistance to fading in sunlight. The higher the grade, the more resistant it is to fading and weather effects.

3. More Options:

With the advent of stronger siding due to the addition of stone components, homeowners discovered that they had more options. Vinyl siding now comes in many different varieties and styles.  Options include vertical siding, horizontal siding, shingle, overlap siding, as well as countless colors. Vinyl is available in more colors than could be found in years past. Siding color does not fade as quickly as it used to with older vinyl. Now, pigmentation is baked onto siding surfaces, resulting in longer-lasting colors and almost scratch-proof color surfaces. However, no vinyl is fade-proof in sunshine, so homeowners should not be surprised that even newer siding begins to lose some of its luster and color in five or more years.

4. Insulation:

Another feature of new vinyl siding is its excellent insulation advantage. Vinyl siding is often sold with insulation that increases a home’s cooling and heating efficiency. Newer insulation materials guarantee better insulation advantage, resulting in reduced electric, cooling, and heating bills for homeowners.

5. Green and Earth-Friendly:

Siding in recent years has been formulated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The addition of PVC to vinyl siding results in 20 percent less breakdown and emission of carbon dioxide into the environment. In addition, many companies offer green siding, stating that their siding contains more natural ingredients such as ground up stone, and that colors are added with natural pigments. The only drawback to using natural paints is the fact that this type of paint often does not hold up to the elements and time as well as more traditional paint coating methods do. Greener vinyl siding offers another siding option for homeowners concerned about the effects of their home’s exterior on the environment and planet.

How to know if your home need to replace your Roof

There are some specific things that contribute to the wear and tear of your roof, like severe weather, extreme temperatures and old age. A damaged roof can cause leaks, decrease your home's value or even collapse. Regular inspections will prevent minor issues from turning into major ones and can prevent you from prematurely investing in a new roof.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez,   we give you some tips to know if it’s time to replace your Roof or if you just need to make some repairs:

1. Exterior Roof check:

- Look for Damage: Major damage to roofing materials should be fairly obvious. Shingles will split, crack and warp if they get too old, while tile will break if it has been damaged by hail. If your roof is older and there is visible damage, it is far easier to tell if you need a new roof.

- Look for Moisture Problems: Mold and other moisture-related problems could wreak just as much damage outside as in. A bad shingle can allow moisture to sit instead of shedding it down the roof. Keep in mind that water will flow down, so you may have to track the problem higher up.

- Shingle Granules: As your shingles age they will shed more and more granules. If they are getting too old, you will likely find excessive amounts of granules in your gutters. Having bits of the roof in your gutters a sure-fire way to tell if you need a new roof sooner rather than later.

- Look for Wear: Roofing materials around chimneys and vents can wear over time, so keep an eye out for any issues here.

- Check Your Drainage: Your gutters and downspouts are an important component of your home and should be cleaned a few times a year. Check to make sure they are securely attached, and that water is flowing where it should be.

2. Interior Roof check:

- Light shining in from outside: This is the easiest problem to discover. Any light shining in through your roof from outside is an issue that should be addressed immediately. If the light is getting through, so is moisture.

- Sagging Areas: If there is a sag in your roof this will be one of the easier ways to tell if you need a new roof. Sagging is a definite indication of structural issues. Something has given way, either due to external pressure from outside or from moisture damage to the wood that makes up your roof.

- Dark Spots or Trails: Dark areas and trails are an indication that moisture is penetrating your roof somewhere and probably creating mold in the process. Moisture will eventually cause real problems, both with your roof and with the interior of your home.

- Leaks or Water Damage: If you see a leak or visible water damage it is time to call an Augusta roofing contractor. Water causes damage, and it is important to patch any leaks as soon as possible.

Exterior Fall Home Maintenance Tips

Fall is the best time to take care of the things that can make a big difference for you and your home. In the winter, the wind blows harder than during any other time of the year. Freezing water can break apart concrete and metal pipes, gutters, and downspouts. The freeze/thaw cycle is also damaging and is worse in some areas rather than in others.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you six tips for exterior Fall Home Maintenance that can help you save money and keep your home in good shape during the winter months.

1. A thorough inspection of the exterior roofing, gutters and siding:

In order to evaluate the amount of preparation for winter needed, the first task for homeowners is a comprehensive assessment of the condition of the home and structure. The simplest way to do this is to create an inspection checklist that covers the condition of foundation, exterior siding, gutters and downspouts. Note whether tasks require repair or replacement.

2. Preventing loss of home heating:

Energy costs can be prohibitive during severely cold winters. To prevent loss of home heating, it’s necessary to check for exterior gaps around door and window frames. These often occur due to normal weathering. However, left unnoticed, they can increase the cost of energy.

3. Cleaning debris from gutters:

When gutters become clogged with debris like fallen leaves or bits of dust, wet fall weather may cause the gutters to collect water. When this happens, elevated levels of water in gutters tend to seep under the eaves of the roof and cause interior damage.

4. Pressure washing of exterior siding:

Though it may go unnoticed in the heat and humidity of summer, exterior siding does show signs of residue buildup. This is especially true if there are foundation plants and shrubs or large trees in proximity to the house. Green residue builds up and makes the exterior siding appear unsightly. Pressure wash exterior siding to keep it looking fresh and vibrant.

5. Inspect foundation for cracks or soil erosion:

To properly maintain the exterior of a home during the fall season, it’s important to inspect the foundation of the home up to the level where siding ends and foundation begins. Soil, especially in certain types of sandy soil, tends to shift slightly with each year. Foundation cracks may begin as tiny spider-like veins. As soil continues to shift, however, those tiny cracks can open wider and become a major problem. Check every fall for these and use a special cement sealant, applied with a single blade trowel.

6. Secure loose exterior siding:

If siding doesn’t require painting or pressure washing, check for areas that appear to have loose shingles or shakes. Should a serious late autumn or early wind storm occur, loose siding can detach and be damaged.

4 Fall Roofing Maintenance Tips

If you haven’t already taken steps to get your roof ready for fall and winter weather, it’s time to start. Fall is a beautiful season with leaf color changes. But for homeowners, fall presents challenges unique to the season.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you four Roof Maintenance Tips to protect your Home this Fall:

1. Trim your Trees:

If your home has tree branches that over hang your house, it’s time to trim those branches to prevent roof damage that occurs when wind breaks limbs or when ice or snow covered limbs break and hit your roof. We recommend you hire an Augusta roofing contractor if you are unable to perform these tasks or your roof is too steep.

2. Keep your Gutters Clean:

Leaves present another challenge. While leaves are lightweight when they first fall on your roof, they get heavier and gather in vulnerable places like valleys and in gutters as they become wet from rain. This debris build up on your roof and in your gutters and cause damage.

If water gets backed up in your gutters, they could overflow and cause water back up under shingles causing damage to your roof and your house.

3. Inspect your Attic:

The worst thing that could happen this season is to miss a leak before the cold winter months kick in. Take advantage of the cooler fall weather to inspect your attic. Wait for a rainy day and inspect your attic for leaks.

If you see any mold, mildew, warped wood, or stained insulation in your attic, it’s imperative you get an Augusta roofing contractor out to take care of the problem.

4. Limit traffic on your Roof:

We all enjoy putting decorations and lights out on our houses during the holiday season, but it’s important to remember regular traffic on your roof can damage it.

If you’re climbing around on your roof often, you can damage shingles or cause flashing to crack under the pressure, so be cautious.

At US ROOFING Contractors Augusta-Georgia our commitment is to make you and your family feel safe!

Important tips on preparing your Gutters for Fall

Most people see Fall as a time with beautiful trees and perfect temperatures, but homeowners also know it as a time of big leaf piles. Before we get too far into fall, there are several things you need to do to get your home prepared for the fall and winter season, with gutter maintenance and gutter cleaning on the forefront. That way, when the leaves start pouring into your gutters, you have a clean path for them to flow through.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you four important tips to prepare your gutters for the fall season:

1. Clean your gutters:

No one likes to do it, but gutter maintenance is a task that needs to be done. The best tip to get ready for fall is to clean your gutters thoroughly. This could mean spending a weekend getting every last seed, pod, twig, leaf, and other foliage debris from the trough of the gutter as well as the downspout of the gutter. If you have many trees in your neighborhood, you may have to perform gutter maintenance at least once a month and possibly twice a month if the leaves are especially falling.

2. Do an inspection:

The next important tip is to inspect your gutters and downspouts often. Are they sagging or pulling away from the house? Are the seams starting to split? Are they full of debris? Is the downspout loose? By inspecting your gutters and then properly maintaining or replacing them as needed, you will save yourself stress and aggravation as well as money in the near future.

3. Trim branches:

Another tip to prepare your gutter for the fall season is to trim back any branches from the gutters or that might be touching your roof. Trees and branches grow over the summer months and can be directly over your troughs. When the wind blows, the leaves and seeds are falling straight into the gutters and clogging them up. Make sure to trim back those branches to prepare them for the fall season ahead.

4. Hire a professional Roofing Contractor:

The last important tip to prepare your gutters for fall is to hire a professional Roofing Contractor. A professional gutter services team can investigate what issues you have with your gutters and repair them as necessary. They can also install a leaf guard which prevents the leaves from falling in your gutters and clogging them up, therefore, preventing you from having to clean the gutters out as much. If you do not have the time to clean the gutters yourself, make sure to call a gutter services company who can perform the task for you.

3 Signs your Home needs New Siding

Replacing a home’s siding may not be at the top of most homeowner’s to-do lists. In fact, unless there is a specific and urgent problem with a home’s siding, replacing the siding may not be on the homeowner’s radar at all.

Many types of siding last for decades, especially when the siding has been properly maintained. But for even the best-maintained siding, there comes a time when repairing or repainting just won't cut it a time when, for the continued protection of your home, you need to replace the siding altogether.

At US ROOFING Contractors Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you three signs that you should keep in mind to know if your home needs New Siding:

1. Moisture and Mold:

Inside your home, wherever you discover the effects of moisture buildup be it rot, mold, or mildew, quickly investigate the condition of the same area on the home exterior. If damaged siding appears to be to blame, then you need to update the siding, or the insulation, or both.

2. Cracks and Gaps:

Holes and cracks are unsightly, but such outward imperfections not only endanger the appearance of your home. They are compromising its structural integrity. For one thing, gaps in exterior cladding admit moisture, the enemy of wood. Plus, wherever water gains entry to the home, so too can critters and insects.

3. Increased Bills:

Although there are no obvious signs of damage to the exterior of your home, check for subtle signs of underperformance. For instance, if you feel drafts near walls and windows, or around switches and electrical receptacles, chances are that additional insulation and new siding would make a huge difference, both in terms of eliminating drafts and saving you money on heating and cooling.

How to know if your Roof is ready for a Hurricane

Preparing for a Hurricane is essential to keeping you and your family safe, this preparation is also essential to protect your important investments: your house and business.

During extreme weather incidents, the roof is one of the most vulnerable areas of a home. Roof cover damage is one of the most dangerous effects of a hurricane as even partial damage can leave the rest of your home vulnerable to wind, water and other elements.

With any type of roof, maintenance is integral to protecting your home. At US ROOFING Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you a few simple precautions to help you make sure your roof is kept in optimal condition and ready for hurricane season:

1. Professional inspection:

Prevention is key. To maintain the strength and durability of your roof, ask a licensed roofing professional inspect your roof regularly. While you can always manually inspect your roof, a qualified roofing inspector can thoroughly examine it, identify areas of concern and provide you with a detailed report including roof life expectancy, pictures of your roof and repair estimates. Professional inspectors can also make hurricane preparedness recommendations based on your particular roof.

2. Install hurricane straps:

An added layer of protection from high winds, hurricane straps (also known as roof tie-downs) securely tie rafters to load bearing walls. Made of galvanized metal, they can attach to any type of roof, protecting it and the structure beneath, as well as keeping it from detaching and causing damage to nearby structures and objects.

3. Add roof reinforcements:

Reinforcing your roof can decrease the likelihood of damage—particularly if your structure is located in a hurricane-prone area. Reinforcements can include overlapping sturdy materials on top of your roof, such as adding heavier metal panels or two-by-fours for added strength. When inspecting your roof, a professional roofing contractor can advise you on reinforcements suitable for your structure.

4. Trim your trees:

Trees that hang over your roof and near your home can be dangerous any time of year, but particularly during a hurricane. Falling tree limbs can cause severe damage to your roof and allow water into your structure, cause electrical issues, or even injure someone inside. Trimming your trees to keep them away from your roof is an easy way to prevent damage and injury.

5. Perform an interior inspection:

If there are issues with your roof, chances are that you will eventually see their damaging effects inside the structure. While it’s ideal to catch issues before they can be seen inside, always be on the lookout for spots and stains on the ceiling, peeling paint, damp areas and daylight seeping in—all of which are serious indicators of a compromised roof and should be addressed immediately.
