Maintenance of your roof in Winter

Here are some tips for preventing the main risks, like felt movement, blistering or splitting and for generally maintaining your roof this winter.

1. Removal of debris
Dust and dirt accumulate on your roof all year, but the stronger winds and rain will deposit large items too. Gently sweep to remove most of the dirt and larger items such as leaves and pebbles, taking care not to damage the protective roof surface.

2.Tree branches
Check out any trees nearby. Low hanging branches may scrape against the surface of your roof, causing damage. It is easier to remove overhanging branches when they are smaller and before they begin to grow again in the warmer spring days.

3.Checking for cracks
Look over the whole surface of the roof, identifying any cracks, holes or patches of worn material. Small areas of damage are often easily repaired, but larger areas of damage will need professional roof company attention. The caulking should be intact and free from cracks. Damaged flashing is best removed and replaced in order to maintain the integrity of the roof. As with all repairs, we advise you to act sooner and contact US Roofing to do the roof repair.

4.Water
The flat roof surface should allow water to run off freely into the guttering. Check that gutters and drains are not clogged and regularly remove any debris. Any areas of ponding, where water remains in pools, may need to be professionally infilled.

5.Snow
Usually, snow will melt and therefore run off the roof in the same way as water. However, heavy snowfall may need to be removed so that it does not cause the collapse of the roof structure.
