Should you repair or replace the siding?

Siding is a very important part in your house, that covers the exterior of your home and not only helps keep your home looking good, it helps to protect it from the elements but unfortunately, over time the siding may become damaged, needing to be repaired or replaced. It's important to keep in mind that the decision to repair the siding or replace the siding depends largely on what type of siding it is that you have, and what the degree of damage is.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you some important information to help you decide whether to repair or replace your Vinyl or Fiber Cement Siding:

Vinyl Siding:

Vinyl siding is a good alternative to look like wood products. It does not require painting or a lot of maintenance beyond the occasional hosing off. You must be careful because it is fairly thin and brittle, so any impact on the siding can leave a crack and if this happens, there is no any way to fix the board; It needs to be replaced. The good news is that while the rest of the vinyl siding is in good shape, you can replace the siding in the affected panels by disengaging them from where they snap in, and nailing a new board into place, while leaving the rest of the boards alone.

Fiber Cement Siding:

The Fiber-cement Siding is very low maintenance, is  resistance to fire, wind, rot, insects, UV rays and rain and you only need to do a few things each year to keep this type of siding in good shape.
Check the any area where your fiber cement siding meets another building material (window sill, brick, doorframe, trim, etc.) becouse is particularly vulnerable to moisture and will generally have a layer of caulk between it. Make sure there are no holes, cracks or other signs of deterioration in the caulk. If you find any damage, you can either repair the caulk yourself or hire a siding or roofing contractor make the job.

Repair Siding First:

Most of the time siding can be repaired instead of replaced. In the cases where siding replacement is necessary, often only the affected panels need to be replaced, and not the whole house. Only major structural problems or advanced rot that has spread throughout the exterior of the home will require the replacement of the entire siding. Otherwise, replace your siding when you are ready for a change and make siding repairs in a timely way to take care of other minor problems.

How to know if you need a new Roof

Most people have no idea of the condition in which their roof is in and unfortunately, this could have costly consequences.

It is very important that you inspect your roof regularly, or that a roofing contractor check it out for you. Spotting and fixing issues while they are still small, can help save you from some expensive repairs later.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you some of the best tips to keep in mind when inspecting your roof,  so that you know whether it can be easily repaired or you need to find a replacement:

1. Visually inspect the roof:

You should check your roof to see if there are any sagging, dark spots or dark trails. Detecting any of these is an indication that you need to replace your roof immediately before the damage becomes even worse.

2. Missing or loose Slates/Tiles:

It’s important to check if you can see any missing or loose slates or tiles. Holes in your roof will let in the rain, and therefore will cause costly damage to the roof timbers and other parts of the structure.

3. Check the life of the roof material:

Whether your roof needs to be replaced it could depend on what material has been used. Generally, concrete will not need to be replaced unless a lot of damage has been caused. Materials such as tiles and ceramic need to be replaced every 20 years, so if you are at the end of its life consider having an important inspection.

4. How old is your roof:

It is important to know when it was the last time your roof was replaced, it could be 10, 20, or 30 years old and in need of some heavy work. If you’ve not been in the house a long time, check the documents that you would have received with the home to see when was the last time it was replaced.

Common signs your Gutters need a cleaning

Although your home's roofing system acts as your first line of defense against water and debris, the gutters play an equally important role. They prevent the accumulation of unwanted elements to avoid damage in your home.

You may think that something small like a clogged gutter might not have a big impact on your home but unfortunately, the clogged gutters can cause serious damage throughout your home.

The best way to avoid these problems is to check your gutters frequently. At US ROOFING Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you five signs you could have clogged rain gutters:

1. Water is spilling over the sides:

If you see water spilling over the sides of your gutters like a waterfall, it is a clear sign that you have clogged rain gutters. The obstruction can force water over the sides of your gutter, leading to expensive water related damages. For example, if you notice your basement flooding during a rainstorm, it is usually because the water is spilling over the sides of your gutters.

2. You spot birds or pests by your Roof:

If you are noticing animals or pests scurrying around your gutters, this can be a big sign your gutters are clogged.

Birds, pests and rodents usually find the gutters to be a convenient place to make your home. It is important to ensure that you do not have any pests clogging your gutters so the water can flow freely away from your home.

3. Plant growth:

Seeds can accumulate in your gutters and along with dirt and debris, a gutter garden can form. Plant growth is an obvious sign that your gutters need a cleaning. Foam gutter guards are notorious for encouraging plant growth in your gutters.

4. Sagging Gutters:

Your sagging gutters are a sign that your gutters are clogged. The weight of the debris, leaves, shingle grit and pine needles can cause your gutters to bend in the middle and sag. Unfortunately, your gutters will be ineffective at carrying water away from your home.

If enough debris remains in your gutters for long periods of time, the excess weight will begin to wear on the guttering itself.

5. Staining on your Siding:

Any signs of staining on the siding of your home can be a sign of standing water in your gutter system. Rain water that is stagnant could end up causing costly damage to the fascia boards behind the gutters and on the shingles of your roof.

US Roofing services your home may need

Maintaining your home should always be a priority. Even more important is the need to keep the roof in a good condition, since proper maintenance of your roof will help minimize problems in the future and avoid costly repairs later.
If you are facing a leaking roof or simply think it is time to improve your home, it is important that you make the right choice.
At US ROOFING Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we have several roofing service options available for you to choose the best one according to your need:

1. Roofing installation:

Getting a new roofing system installed is not a difficult task, so you need to decide which one is best for you. Pitched roofs are best suited for larger properties. They cost more to build, but they last longer. Flat roofs on the other hand is more cost effective, but better used for small constructions, such as garages, extensions and loft conversions.

2. Roof maintenance:

Your roof needs care and attention. It is there to serve you so you need to ensure it’s in full working order.
Broken tiles, fungus and leaks are all common problems faced by homeowners. Regular maintenance can ensure that these problems are fixed before they cause any serious issues.

3. Guttering:

Maintain your guttering to keep your home looking great all year long. You may want to think about repairing any damaged gutters or replacing your existing guttering with a PVC or plastic design.

4. Storm damage:

During autumn and winter, you face bad weather. Damaged trees and blown off tiles weaken your roof, so always carry out essential repairs if your roof has suffered a bad blow. It is important that you call a specialist roofing contractor to do this for you.

5. Roofing repair:

Replacing shingles due to wind damage or a fallen limb is a generally easy and inexpensive. Broken or damaged shingles can be removed, and new ones can be slipped in place. The downside is that unless your roof is relatively new and you happen to have saved some spare shingles from the job, your patch job may not match the existing roof.

How to choose the right Siding

Siding has an additional feature than simply cover your house; It also gives to your house a sense of a style and contributes greatly to your curb appeal. So when it is time to install new siding or to renovate what is already in your house, most homeowners wonder what will be the best liner for your home. Choosing the right siding for your house can be a challenge, but there are several ways you can help narrow down the selection until you find exactly what you are looking for.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama,  we give you five basic issues you should consider that will help you make the right decision:

1. Water Resistance:
Depending on the material some types of siding will be more water resistant than others. This will prolong the life of that material as well as prevent decay due to water or moisture.

2. Aesthetics & Texture:
The right color, texture, and overall aesthetics of the siding is all about appearance. How your siding will look and what colors are available are probably one of the most important decisions that will affect your siding purchase.

3. Energy Efficiency:
Siding material comes with an R-value that measures the energy efficiency of the material. The higher the R value the better the thermal insulation. Check the R-value rating for energy savings and understand what will be needed as far as insulation beneath the cladding.

4. Versatility:
The structure of your home and exterior can play a role in what type of siding your wish to install. Make sure the siding has the versatility to meet the varied needs of your specific project. If there are aspects of your home's exterior that will make using a particular type of siding more challenging than others, make sure you understand what the added costs or necessary adjustments will be.

5. Durability:
Does it have the strength to resist temperature shifts present in your climate? How does it stand up to everyday wear and tear? How long will your siding last before it has to be replaced, maintained, or painted? Some siding such as stucco, if done right can last a lifetime of the home and will only need to be repainted every 6-7 years.
