Keep your Roof cool in summer

The Roofing System is the largest source of heat gain, especially in low-rise buildings, and roof cooling will considerably minimize heat transfer, leading to saving money on the power bill.

The heat absorbed by a traditional roof on a sunny day raises temperatures inside the house, contributing to higher air conditioning requirements, higher energy costs, and more discomfort on hot days for anyone without air conditioning.

At US ROOFING Contractors located  in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you an important information to keep your Roof cool in Summer:

- A cool roof is one that has been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof.

- Cool roofs can be made of a highly reflective type of paint, a sheet covering, or highly reflective tiles or shingles.

- Standard or dark roofs can reach temperatures of 150°F or more in the summer sun. A cool roof under the same conditions could stay more than 50°F cooler and save energy and money by using less air conditioning.

- There are many types of roof systems available, but the surface exposed to the sun is the one that determines if a roof is cool or not. You can usually make a new or existing roof cool by selecting the appropriate surface.

- Cool roof coatings are white or special reflective pigments that reflect sunlight. Coatings are like very thick paints that can protect the roof surface from ultra-violet (UV) light and chemical damage, and some offer water protection and restorative features.

- A cool roof can benefit a building and its occupants by:

1. Reducing energy bills by decreasing air conditioning needs.

2. Improving indoor comfort for spaces that are not air conditioned, such as garages or covered patios.

3. Decreasing roof temperature, which may extend roof service life.

How to Choose the Right Gutter Color for your Home

Properly functioning gutters are an important part of the preventive maintenance for any house. A gutter system channels water from rain, snow, and ice away from your house to prevent costly foundation damage.

Since your gutters will hang on the outside of your home,
the way they look can and does affect your home’s curb appeal. That’s why choosing the right color for your gutters is important.

At US ROOFING Contractors  located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you four important tips to help you choose the proper color for your gutters:

1. Low-Key Color:

The cardinal rule for choosing gutters that will look good, not just function well, is to choose a descreet color. Don´t  introduce an entirely new color to your home’s exterior color scheme. You’re generally left with three options for color: same as your siding, same as your trim, or same as your roof.

2. The color of your Roof:

One option is to make your gutters the same color as the roof so that they don’t call attention to themselves. This helps your gutters to be seen as an extension of the roofline rather than a demarcation. For shingle roofs, a dark bronze, gray, brown, or black may be smart options.

3. The color of the home’s exterior walls:

It may be more beneficial to have the gutters match the exterior paint color. As with trying to match the roof color, this method allows the gutters to become less of a visual element for the home. You shouldn’t pick a gutter that clashes with your home’s walls.

4. How much will it cost?:

If you are replacing gutters on a budget, be sure to check the price of a nontraditional gutter color; you may have to pay more money to have your gutters painted before they are installed. In the end, it might be wiser to select a standard color in order to keep costs to a minimum.

How to choose the right Vinyl Siding

When you choose the right vinyl siding style, you should consider much more than simply choosing the right color. It is important to know that insulated vinyl siding is a good siding option for extreme weather conditions, choosing just the right siding for a particular house takes a little thought.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you some important tips to help you choose the right Vinyl Siding:

1. Color is important, of course, but several other factors must be considered as well. Among them are grain or pattern: Each has its advantages; a smooth texture looks clean and simple, but a wood grain or other texture can add so much to the look of a home. Ultimately, the decision should be based on the overall design concept for the home.

2. The size of the boards: Vinyl siding comes in a variety of sizes. A very popular style is the traditional barn look or barn style. This is achieved by alternating foot-wide boards with narrow boards. The effect is achieved by running the boards either horizontally or vertically. This is a choice that is dependent on the individual’s aesthetic vision for the home, and the choices available to the homeowner are almost limitless.

3. Style: The most common vinyl siding choice is the shingle style. But even here the homeowner has a choice. Vinyl shingles can be laid straight-edged for a smooth, uniform look, or they can be staggered, thus evoking a rustic, almost handmade feel.

4. Vinyl siding color: Color is very personal and are dependent on the master plan for the home, but the homeowner is faced with an almost limitless selection of colors to choose from. Almost any color that the homeowner can imagine is available. The basic color palette is divided into four primary shades: warm earth tones, earth tones, reds, and blues. Within each of these broad categories there are a wide range of variations.

5. Once the pattern and the color have been decided, the next important choice is insulated or non-insulated: Insulated siding costs a little more, naturally, but the advantages far outweigh the added expense. Insulated vinyl siding will save a tremendous amount on the cost of energy both in heating and cooling a home; the energy savings generally equal the additional insulating cost after just 3.6 years, meaning that in less than four years insulated vinyl siding will have paid for itself.

Tips to remove and prevent moss from your Roof

Moss is attracted to damp and shady environment and spreads quickly. For this reason it often occurs on the north side of the roof, since it receives the least amount of sun, or under overhanging trees that provide shade. Over time it can cause roofing to degrade.

At  US ROOFING  Contractors  located  in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you some tips to remove and prevent Moss from your Roof:

- The less expensive solution is to spray wash the roof with a 50 percent mix of water and bleach to get rid of the algae.

- Don´t use pressure washers. They're likely to damage the shingles.

- Be sure to wet your foundation plantings first, and rinse everything in clean water when you're done.

-You can remove moss from your roof with a long handled scrub brush if you’re careful not to overdo it.

- Be sure to wear rubber gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection when working with chemicals.

- An occasional cleaning might not harm your roof but repeated use of harsh chemicals, or the erosive effects of pressure washing, can damage or shorten the life of asphalt shingles.

- Oxygen bleach lightens stains as well and is less harmful to the environment, but it doesn’t produce as immediate or dramatic an effect as chlorine bleach.

- It’s best to clean your roof on a cloudy day to prevent the cleaner from evaporating too quickly.

- To prevent moss from returning, cut back any limbs that overhang the roof.

- To keep the moss from coming install strips of copper or zinc along the ridgeback. That way whenever it rains, some of the metal molecules will wash down the roof and kill any algae trying to regain a foothold on your shingles.

Vertical vs. Horizontal Siding for your home

If you are considering replacing or installing the siding in your home, then you have got a lot of decisions to make. First, you will need to decide the specific material, color and you will also need to decide between horizontal and vertical siding installation. Most homeowners opt for the classic horizontal orientation, but vertical is not completely unknown. Keep in mind that the type of siding you choose directly affects what your home will look like.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you some recommendations to help you understand the advantages and disadvantages of each option:

Vertical Siding Installation:

1. Any type of siding material can be installed vertically, even though it's less commonly seen in residential constructions.

2. If you want a unique appearance with their exterior remodeling project, vertical siding installation can be a great idea.

3. Vertical siding is a lot easier to clean than horizontal siding, which can save homeowners time and money.

4. Vertical siding installation is more complex than horizontal siding installation.

Horizontal Siding Installation:

1. Horizontal siding is the least expensive option, making it ideal for homeowners needing siding replacement on a budget.

2. It's much easier to install, so the project can be done in about half the time required for a similar vertical siding installation project.

3. Horizontal siding can be less durable than vertical siding. That's because it's more prone to water damage over time. When rain falls, it falls vertically, making it possible for water to seep in between gaps in horizontal siding.

4. Horizontal siding is a lot more difficult to clean than vertical siding, since a special technique needs to be used so as to avoid water leaking in between the horizontal slats.

Roof Repair or Roof Replacement

As a homeowner, it’s important to make sure that your roofing system is in the best condition. A healthy roofing system will protect your home from a serious and costly damages, increase its value, and save you money on heating and cooling.

If you think that your roof is too old, or if is falling apart, leaking, or has signs of bubbled or cracked shingles, you need to choose whether you should repair or replace it.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you a guide that will help you make the best decision for your home:

1. Think about what areas of your roof need to be replaced:

If there are only a few areas on your roof that need to be fixed, a repair will probably be fine. But, if more than 30 percent of your roof needs to be repaired, a roof replacement is probably a necessity.

2. What is the age of your roofing system?:

If your roof is relatively new, you probably will not need a complete roof replacement. If your roof has never been repaired or replaced for 25 to 30 years, it would be better to think about a roof replacement.

3. Determine if your gutters require a replacement:

If you find that both your roof and gutters need a replacement, it may be more affordable and convenient to have everything replaced at once.

4. Check if the roof deck is damaged by moisture:

If your roof deck has any moisture damage, a roof repair will not solve the problem. Therefore, replacing your roof would be your best option.

The importance of renewing your Gutters

Homeowners always want to fix up their home and take care of their property, so it is important that once or twice a year you invest in new renovations to keep your home modern and up to date. You should also take the necessary precautions to keep your house protected and safe from different types of damages.

Gutters play a very important role with the health of your home. When your gutters become clogged, water can spill over the side of your gutters leading to a variety of expensive and serious water related problems.

At US ROOFING Contractors Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give five important reasons to renew your gutters:

1. Keep your basement from Inundation:

Clogged gutters can put your clean and dry basement at risk. As water accumulates at the base of your home, it can leak into your basement and cause flooding. Not only is this a pain to clean up, it can ruin your valuables that you may have stored in your basement.

2.  Prevent Roofing damage:

Roof repairs or replacement can be very expensive. To keep your roof in excellent shape, it’s important to have clog-free gutters. When your gutters clog, water can back up onto your roof, leading to leaks and erosion over time.

3. Protect against Foundation damage:

Clogged gutters will cause rainwater to run down the side of your home and accumulate at the base of your property. That standing water can contribute to serious and costly foundation damage as it will erode and weaken your property’s structure.

4. Prevent fascia damage:

Your fascia is in close proximity to your gutters. As your gutters become clogged with leaves, maple seeds, pine needles, and other debris, rainwater will flow down the side of your fascia. This can leave unsightly staining on the side of your home, and contribute to mold and mildew problems that can be a headache to remedy.

5. Prevent mold and mildew:

Clogged gutters not only put your home in danger, but your family’s health, too. In fact, clogged gutters can lead to the development of mold. Unfortunately, these harmful micro-organisms may cause serious damage or evoke allergies in you and your family. Keeping your gutters clear and clog-free is important for keeping your home mold and mildew free.
