Modern Vinyl Siding Options

Modern Vinyl Siding gives you a great way to add color and definition to your house. Creating a perfect exterior of your house became easier with the creation of vinyl siding. While aesthetics are always important, you also want to consider the material's durability, ability to resist water, ease of installation and versatility.
Through the years, vinyl siding has changed and siding now has new and improved features.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you five important features of Modern Vinyl Siding:

1.Durability:

Today’s vinyl siding is more durable than ever. Siding of old was created with one layer and often included materials for durability that proved not to be safe, such as asbestos. Today, vinyl siding is created with a process called co-extrusion. With co-extrusion, two layers of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are applied to the surface. The top layer is capstocked or, as mentioned previously, strengthened with material such as titanium dioxide. This strengthened outer layer provides less breakdown over time as well as longer durability, thus resulting in less frequent replacement.
Creating a stronger outer finish also increases the wind resistance of vinyl siding. With increased outer layer strength, vinyl siding withstands strong winds and object impact damage.

2. Less Chemicals:

Siding of the past contained many chemicals required in the process of making the fiber. Siding often broke down with heat and extremes of weather, thus emitting chemicals into the surrounding environment. Newer siding is created with 10% titanium dioxide pigment, which provides resistance to the natural breakdown of ultraviolet light or extremes of weather. Generally, vinyl siding is sold with a grade, which represents its resistance to fading in sunlight. The higher the grade, the more resistant it is to fading and weather effects.

3. More Options:

With the advent of stronger siding due to the addition of stone components, homeowners discovered that they had more options. Vinyl siding now comes in many different varieties and styles.  Options include vertical siding, horizontal siding, shingle, overlap siding, as well as countless colors. Vinyl is available in more colors than could be found in years past. Siding color does not fade as quickly as it used to with older vinyl. Now, pigmentation is baked onto siding surfaces, resulting in longer-lasting colors and almost scratch-proof color surfaces. However, no vinyl is fade-proof in sunshine, so homeowners should not be surprised that even newer siding begins to lose some of its luster and color in five or more years.

4. Insulation:

Another feature of new vinyl siding is its excellent insulation advantage. Vinyl siding is often sold with insulation that increases a home’s cooling and heating efficiency. Newer insulation materials guarantee better insulation advantage, resulting in reduced electric, cooling, and heating bills for homeowners.

5. Green and Earth-Friendly:

Siding in recent years has been formulated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The addition of PVC to vinyl siding results in 20 percent less breakdown and emission of carbon dioxide into the environment. In addition, many companies offer green siding, stating that their siding contains more natural ingredients such as ground up stone, and that colors are added with natural pigments. The only drawback to using natural paints is the fact that this type of paint often does not hold up to the elements and time as well as more traditional paint coating methods do. Greener vinyl siding offers another siding option for homeowners concerned about the effects of their home’s exterior on the environment and planet.

How to know if your home need to replace your Roof

There are some specific things that contribute to the wear and tear of your roof, like severe weather, extreme temperatures and old age. A damaged roof can cause leaks, decrease your home's value or even collapse. Regular inspections will prevent minor issues from turning into major ones and can prevent you from prematurely investing in a new roof.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez,   we give you some tips to know if it’s time to replace your Roof or if you just need to make some repairs:

1. Exterior Roof check:

- Look for Damage: Major damage to roofing materials should be fairly obvious. Shingles will split, crack and warp if they get too old, while tile will break if it has been damaged by hail. If your roof is older and there is visible damage, it is far easier to tell if you need a new roof.

- Look for Moisture Problems: Mold and other moisture-related problems could wreak just as much damage outside as in. A bad shingle can allow moisture to sit instead of shedding it down the roof. Keep in mind that water will flow down, so you may have to track the problem higher up.

- Shingle Granules: As your shingles age they will shed more and more granules. If they are getting too old, you will likely find excessive amounts of granules in your gutters. Having bits of the roof in your gutters a sure-fire way to tell if you need a new roof sooner rather than later.

- Look for Wear: Roofing materials around chimneys and vents can wear over time, so keep an eye out for any issues here.

- Check Your Drainage: Your gutters and downspouts are an important component of your home and should be cleaned a few times a year. Check to make sure they are securely attached, and that water is flowing where it should be.

2. Interior Roof check:

- Light shining in from outside: This is the easiest problem to discover. Any light shining in through your roof from outside is an issue that should be addressed immediately. If the light is getting through, so is moisture.

- Sagging Areas: If there is a sag in your roof this will be one of the easier ways to tell if you need a new roof. Sagging is a definite indication of structural issues. Something has given way, either due to external pressure from outside or from moisture damage to the wood that makes up your roof.

- Dark Spots or Trails: Dark areas and trails are an indication that moisture is penetrating your roof somewhere and probably creating mold in the process. Moisture will eventually cause real problems, both with your roof and with the interior of your home.

- Leaks or Water Damage: If you see a leak or visible water damage it is time to call an Augusta roofing contractor. Water causes damage, and it is important to patch any leaks as soon as possible.

Exterior Fall Home Maintenance Tips

Fall is the best time to take care of the things that can make a big difference for you and your home. In the winter, the wind blows harder than during any other time of the year. Freezing water can break apart concrete and metal pipes, gutters, and downspouts. The freeze/thaw cycle is also damaging and is worse in some areas rather than in others.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you six tips for exterior Fall Home Maintenance that can help you save money and keep your home in good shape during the winter months.

1. A thorough inspection of the exterior roofing, gutters and siding:

In order to evaluate the amount of preparation for winter needed, the first task for homeowners is a comprehensive assessment of the condition of the home and structure. The simplest way to do this is to create an inspection checklist that covers the condition of foundation, exterior siding, gutters and downspouts. Note whether tasks require repair or replacement.

2. Preventing loss of home heating:

Energy costs can be prohibitive during severely cold winters. To prevent loss of home heating, it’s necessary to check for exterior gaps around door and window frames. These often occur due to normal weathering. However, left unnoticed, they can increase the cost of energy.

3. Cleaning debris from gutters:

When gutters become clogged with debris like fallen leaves or bits of dust, wet fall weather may cause the gutters to collect water. When this happens, elevated levels of water in gutters tend to seep under the eaves of the roof and cause interior damage.

4. Pressure washing of exterior siding:

Though it may go unnoticed in the heat and humidity of summer, exterior siding does show signs of residue buildup. This is especially true if there are foundation plants and shrubs or large trees in proximity to the house. Green residue builds up and makes the exterior siding appear unsightly. Pressure wash exterior siding to keep it looking fresh and vibrant.

5. Inspect foundation for cracks or soil erosion:

To properly maintain the exterior of a home during the fall season, it’s important to inspect the foundation of the home up to the level where siding ends and foundation begins. Soil, especially in certain types of sandy soil, tends to shift slightly with each year. Foundation cracks may begin as tiny spider-like veins. As soil continues to shift, however, those tiny cracks can open wider and become a major problem. Check every fall for these and use a special cement sealant, applied with a single blade trowel.

6. Secure loose exterior siding:

If siding doesn’t require painting or pressure washing, check for areas that appear to have loose shingles or shakes. Should a serious late autumn or early wind storm occur, loose siding can detach and be damaged.

4 Fall Roofing Maintenance Tips

If you haven’t already taken steps to get your roof ready for fall and winter weather, it’s time to start. Fall is a beautiful season with leaf color changes. But for homeowners, fall presents challenges unique to the season.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you four Roof Maintenance Tips to protect your Home this Fall:

1. Trim your Trees:

If your home has tree branches that over hang your house, it’s time to trim those branches to prevent roof damage that occurs when wind breaks limbs or when ice or snow covered limbs break and hit your roof. We recommend you hire an Augusta roofing contractor if you are unable to perform these tasks or your roof is too steep.

2. Keep your Gutters Clean:

Leaves present another challenge. While leaves are lightweight when they first fall on your roof, they get heavier and gather in vulnerable places like valleys and in gutters as they become wet from rain. This debris build up on your roof and in your gutters and cause damage.

If water gets backed up in your gutters, they could overflow and cause water back up under shingles causing damage to your roof and your house.

3. Inspect your Attic:

The worst thing that could happen this season is to miss a leak before the cold winter months kick in. Take advantage of the cooler fall weather to inspect your attic. Wait for a rainy day and inspect your attic for leaks.

If you see any mold, mildew, warped wood, or stained insulation in your attic, it’s imperative you get an Augusta roofing contractor out to take care of the problem.

4. Limit traffic on your Roof:

We all enjoy putting decorations and lights out on our houses during the holiday season, but it’s important to remember regular traffic on your roof can damage it.

If you’re climbing around on your roof often, you can damage shingles or cause flashing to crack under the pressure, so be cautious.

Important tips on preparing your Gutters for Fall

Most people see Fall as a time with beautiful trees and perfect temperatures, but homeowners also know it as a time of big leaf piles. Before we get too far into fall, there are several things you need to do to get your home prepared for the fall and winter season, with gutter maintenance and gutter cleaning on the forefront. That way, when the leaves start pouring into your gutters, you have a clean path for them to flow through.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you four important tips to prepare your gutters for the fall season:

1. Clean your gutters:

No one likes to do it, but gutter maintenance is a task that needs to be done. The best tip to get ready for fall is to clean your gutters thoroughly. This could mean spending a weekend getting every last seed, pod, twig, leaf, and other foliage debris from the trough of the gutter as well as the downspout of the gutter. If you have many trees in your neighborhood, you may have to perform gutter maintenance at least once a month and possibly twice a month if the leaves are especially falling.

2. Do an inspection:

The next important tip is to inspect your gutters and downspouts often. Are they sagging or pulling away from the house? Are the seams starting to split? Are they full of debris? Is the downspout loose? By inspecting your gutters and then properly maintaining or replacing them as needed, you will save yourself stress and aggravation as well as money in the near future.

3. Trim branches:

Another tip to prepare your gutter for the fall season is to trim back any branches from the gutters or that might be touching your roof. Trees and branches grow over the summer months and can be directly over your troughs. When the wind blows, the leaves and seeds are falling straight into the gutters and clogging them up. Make sure to trim back those branches to prepare them for the fall season ahead.

4. Hire a professional Roofing Contractor:

The last important tip to prepare your gutters for fall is to hire a professional Roofing Contractor. A professional gutter services team can investigate what issues you have with your gutters and repair them as necessary. They can also install a leaf guard which prevents the leaves from falling in your gutters and clogging them up, therefore, preventing you from having to clean the gutters out as much. If you do not have the time to clean the gutters yourself, make sure to call a gutter services company who can perform the task for you.

3 Signs your Home needs New Siding

Replacing a home’s siding may not be at the top of most homeowner’s to-do lists. In fact, unless there is a specific and urgent problem with a home’s siding, replacing the siding may not be on the homeowner’s radar at all.

Many types of siding last for decades, especially when the siding has been properly maintained. But for even the best-maintained siding, there comes a time when repairing or repainting just won't cut it a time when, for the continued protection of your home, you need to replace the siding altogether.

At US ROOFING Contractors Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you three signs that you should keep in mind to know if your home needs New Siding:

1. Moisture and Mold:

Inside your home, wherever you discover the effects of moisture buildup be it rot, mold, or mildew, quickly investigate the condition of the same area on the home exterior. If damaged siding appears to be to blame, then you need to update the siding, or the insulation, or both.

2. Cracks and Gaps:

Holes and cracks are unsightly, but such outward imperfections not only endanger the appearance of your home. They are compromising its structural integrity. For one thing, gaps in exterior cladding admit moisture, the enemy of wood. Plus, wherever water gains entry to the home, so too can critters and insects.

3. Increased Bills:

Although there are no obvious signs of damage to the exterior of your home, check for subtle signs of underperformance. For instance, if you feel drafts near walls and windows, or around switches and electrical receptacles, chances are that additional insulation and new siding would make a huge difference, both in terms of eliminating drafts and saving you money on heating and cooling.

How to know if your Roof is ready for a Hurricane

Preparing for a Hurricane is essential to keeping you and your family safe, this preparation is also essential to protect your important investments: your house and business.

During extreme weather incidents, the roof is one of the most vulnerable areas of a home. Roof cover damage is one of the most dangerous effects of a hurricane as even partial damage can leave the rest of your home vulnerable to wind, water and other elements.

With any type of roof, maintenance is integral to protecting your home. At US ROOFING Contractors located in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Alabama, we give you a few simple precautions to help you make sure your roof is kept in optimal condition and ready for hurricane season:

1. Professional inspection:

Prevention is key. To maintain the strength and durability of your roof, ask a licensed roofing professional inspect your roof regularly. While you can always manually inspect your roof, a qualified roofing inspector can thoroughly examine it, identify areas of concern and provide you with a detailed report including roof life expectancy, pictures of your roof and repair estimates. Professional inspectors can also make hurricane preparedness recommendations based on your particular roof.

2. Install hurricane straps:

An added layer of protection from high winds, hurricane straps (also known as roof tie-downs) securely tie rafters to load bearing walls. Made of galvanized metal, they can attach to any type of roof, protecting it and the structure beneath, as well as keeping it from detaching and causing damage to nearby structures and objects.

3. Add roof reinforcements:

Reinforcing your roof can decrease the likelihood of damage—particularly if your structure is located in a hurricane-prone area. Reinforcements can include overlapping sturdy materials on top of your roof, such as adding heavier metal panels or two-by-fours for added strength. When inspecting your roof, a professional roofing contractor can advise you on reinforcements suitable for your structure.

4. Trim your trees:

Trees that hang over your roof and near your home can be dangerous any time of year, but particularly during a hurricane. Falling tree limbs can cause severe damage to your roof and allow water into your structure, cause electrical issues, or even injure someone inside. Trimming your trees to keep them away from your roof is an easy way to prevent damage and injury.

5. Perform an interior inspection:

If there are issues with your roof, chances are that you will eventually see their damaging effects inside the structure. While it’s ideal to catch issues before they can be seen inside, always be on the lookout for spots and stains on the ceiling, peeling paint, damp areas and daylight seeping in—all of which are serious indicators of a compromised roof and should be addressed immediately.
