The importance of the gutters for our roofs

A gutter is simply a thin and shallow curve in a piece of metal, wood or vinyl that collects and transports rainwater or any liquid related to the weather that falls on the roof, so they are of great importance for the proper functioning of the roof and the protection of our construction.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, we are specialists in roofs and gutters, that's why in this article we want to share with you several key aspects

Gutters are used in all houses and buildings with sloping roofs or terraces. No matter where you live, a gutter is a standard part of the building code of a house. This is why they generate so many problems when they are not cleaned and controlled in an adequate or routine way. Since they are very important to the life of your roof, they should be monitored and inspected regularly to ensure there is a good flow of water through the gutter.

When a channel is obstructed, it will create a problem if it is not detected in time. This could cause an accumulation of rainwater that can damage or bring down our roof completely.

This damage by water can be isolated from roof tiles or can penetrate the roof and plaster panels and roof of the house generating humenades and fungi. The magnitude of damage it will cause will depend on how long the water remains stagnant.

This is why it is vital to count professionals both for the installation of roofs and gutters, as well as their constant maintenance.

Tips to keep the roof of your carport clean

If you want to keep the roof of your garage clean, it is important to clean it regularly. This will prevent dirt from accumulating and will help to be alert for any problems that arise and fix them in time. The cleaning process may vary depending on the material of the car port, but it is possible to apply some key tips that work in any type of car port.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you 3 tips to clean and keep the roof of your garage healthy:

Tip 1. Remove moss and debris:

When a roof is under large trees, it is likely to accumulate some moss or mold on the roof. Also, leaves and twigs that can fall on the roof. To clean this, mix a solution of 1 part bleach with 4 parts water in your bucket. Use the pressure washer to apply the solution to the ceiling, taking care to ensure that the most affected areas are completely soaked. Soak it for 10 to 15 minutes and then wash it with the pressure washer or garden hose. For areas where there is more accumulation, you may have to repeat this process until everything is completely clean.

Tip 2. Cut trees:

While the bleach solution dissolves the moss on the roof, you should trim any branches protruding from the roof of the carport. Since these branches are the cause of moss, it is also possible that the branches damage the roof with strong winds. If you observe that there are often birds that use the branches to perch, their droppings can also make the roof unsightly and can cause damage.

Tip 3. Deter the birds:

To keep your garage clean, you must prevent the birds from landing on it or nesting under it to sleep. Block all areas where you can rest and sprinkle or spray strong-smelling spices around the area.

Washing the siding with water under pressure

Pressure cleaning is sometimes the only way you can keep your siding completely clean. Using the pressure washer in the siding is delicate because the pressure of the water can affect the material and cause damage to the siding.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we share a couple tips on how to use pressure cleaning on your  siding:

Never use the highest pressure
The highest pressure is too strong for most siding. The pressure washer shoots a concentrated jet of water that hits the siding with a very large force. The force of the water hits the siding at multiple angles, which can cause the fasteners to come loose, and this can cause the siding to fly off the wall. The replacement of the siding can cost a lot of money. To avoid this, always use the pressure washer at a medium setting. The water current will be equally effective without being exessively strong.

Wash down
When using a pressure washer, we often want to remove as much dirt from the siding as possible very quickly, but doing the job quickly to save time will only cause the siding to be damaged. When you shoot the water jet from under the siding the water will hit the edge of each piece of siding. If there is a lot of pressure when you do this, you can release the siding and it will not be clean. The best way to do it is at a descending angle so that the water cascades down the siding.

With these tips you can do an efficient wash that will make your siding last much longer in good condition.

Ice or snow? Which produces more damage to the Roof

The accumulation of snow and ice on our roofs can have serious consequences if we live in a climate where heavy snowfall and extremely low temperatures are common at certain times of the year. Although both snow and ice can damage a roof, the shape, and causes for which they can accumulate, as well as the damage they can cause, are different. The effects of snow or ice on the roof are similar since both add excess weight that could be problematic. However, each one causes different damages.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we want to tell you the difference of damage caused by ice and snow to the Roof :

Accumulate snow on the roof

The descending force of the snow on a structure is called the snow load. Its effect is very impressive in the regions that there are many annual snowfalls. The structure of the roof is very vulnerable to the effects of snow load, since it is the structure that bears most of the weight. Certain factors can make a roof more susceptible to damage caused by snow load. These include inadequate construction of a new roof, as well as failure to take adequate precautions to protect the structure and insulate the roof without providing ventilation. Old roofs are even more at risk due to their age and worn structure.

Accumulate ice on the roof

The greatest danger with the accumulation of ice on the roof is the formation of ice dams. Ice dams are formed in eaves or overhangs of roofs. As the snow melts and freezes again it creates hanging icicles. Any trace of snow trapped behind has nowhere to go when it melts and turns into water, so it pushes up and under the tiles and this can damage the tiles, the felt, the siding and the interior of the space of drag.

Snow Vs. Ice on the roof
Snow will usually add more weight per square foot of roof space than ice. A roof covered with a sheet of transparent ice adds weight but not as much as the roof covered by a foot of snow. The real problems begin when ice and snow combine to not only add weight but also form ice dams. Between the two, they can ruin eaves, roofing materials, and interior structural timber.

Depending on the region in which you live, it is possible that a heavy snowfall and ice accumulation is a reality that forces you to face. It is not advisable to leave a large amount of snow on your roof for a prolonged period of time, nor should you allow ice to accumulate on the eaves to trap moisture behind it, the best protection against these risks is adequate ventilation, and if necessary, hire staff to do the professional removal of snow and ice.

4 Tips for Siding Care

The siding on the outside of your house will not have problems to spend the winter if you have these precautions.

At US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we share four tips to take care of your  siding during the colder months and even in the months of transition to spring:

1. Avoid repairs and replacements if temperatures are below zero degrees:

Only make repairs strictly necessary if temperatures have dropped below freezing. Although vinyl and other types of siding material are durable, low temperatures make them more brittle and easier to break. Secure the loose and damaged siding and wait for a warmer day to make repairs.

2. Keep any object away from the siding:

Supporting heavy objects against the siding when it is very cold can cause cracks and breaks, especially those made of vinyl. The wood siding are more resistant to damage, but the cement and cedar fiber boards can crack or split if the object has enough weight. Be careful when shoveling large amounts of snow near the house. Improper movement with the shovel can ruin a part of the siding.

3. Be careful when removing icicles from the ceiling:

The main cause of the damages of vinyl siding are the winter icicles that sometimes accumulate on the edge of the roof. Incorrect movement as they fall can send them directly to the siding, creating a hole that requires repair. Use the end of a broom handle to gently tap the worst part of these icicles, but make them fall out of the house. Stay out of the way to avoid injuries.

4. Make caulking repairs for fiber cement siding on warmer days:

Cement and fiber composite facing panels are sealed using a waterproof caulking material. Check the surface of your siding to make sure everything is sealed. Replace any missing or ineffective caulking as soon as you have a sunny day that is above the freezing point. The optimal time to perform these repairs is in the fall before extremely cold temperatures arrive.

3 Tips for Winter Gutter Maintenance in 2018

One of the assignments to prepare for winter is to winterize your yard, siding, material, and gutters. One approach to keep your gutters in great condition over the winter season is to perform the washing and maintenance of your gutters before the long winter starts.

In this small guide, at US ROOFING Contractors located in Augusta-Georgia, Grovetown, North Augusta and Martinez, we give you three tips to winterize your gutters:

Trim back your trees

With all the water from this winter, bushes, trees, and branches can develop rapidly. Branches can overhang over your gutters and cause leaves, twigs, seeds, and debris. Be sure to trim the back branches to prevent the gutters

from becoming clogged, or damaged by the fall of an icy tree branch.

Contract an expert

Just as you would require an expert to perform pile repairs, wash control, basic redesign, exterior painting, or material repairs, you should do something similar when cleaning the gutters for winter. In the event that you have never washed or maintained your gutters before or do not have the information or time to perform this task, you must hire a group of experts to complete the activity for you.

Check your gutters previously in winter

A good tip to winterizing your gutters during this season is to check your drains and valleys to detect any damage or repairs that need to be made. By checking and repairing the drains previously in winter, it will also give you an idea of what damage will be caused to the gutters this cold season.
